On January 7, 1950, a fire broke out at St. Elizabeth's Mental Health Facility for women located in Davenport, Iowa, claiming the lives of forty patients and one nurse, while twenty-five others were rescued in a harrowing attempt to save those trapped in their locked rooms.
Bret Grimes will share the stories of those who survived, as well as the heroic efforts of those who fought the flames. This disaster drew national attention as the second deadliest event in Iowa and the third largest hospital fire in the U.S. to date.
