Beginner's Mahjong Lessons

Discover the fun and challenge of American Mahjong with guidance from experienced instructors Dave and Peg Iglehart. Whether you're completely new to the game or looking for a structured introduction, these lessons are designed to help you build confidence and begin playing successfully.

All lessons are provided free of charge. Game components, handouts, and a copy of the current National Mahjongg League rule card are provided for instructional use during the course.

Independent Study at the Library

Interested in exploring Mahjong before committing to lessons? The Robert R. Jones Public Library offers an in-house Mahjong learning kit available for use within the library.

The kit includes:

  • Mahjong tiles and racks

  • Instructional materials

  • National Mahjongg League rule cards

  • Resources designed to help beginners become familiar with the game

Studying with friends or family members is encouraged, as Mahjong is best learned through discussion and practice. The kit can accommodate small groups, making it a great option for those interested in learning together.

Lesson Structure

Students participate in a series of three lessons conducted over a period of approximately 7–10 days. Each lesson lasts about two hours and builds upon the skills learned in the previous session.

Before Your First Lesson

To ensure a successful learning experience, students are required to complete approximately one hour of independent study before attending their first lesson. Brief study materials will be provided to all new students.

What You'll Learn

Over the course of three lessons, students will:

  • Become familiar with Mahjong tiles and equipment

  • Learn how to read and use the National Mahjongg League rule card

  • Practice selecting and building hands

  • Learn gameplay procedures and rules

  • Develop basic strategies for successful play

  • Gain confidence through guided practice games

Recommended: Purchase Your Own Rule Card

Students are encouraged to order an official National Mahjongg League rule card before beginning lessons. The official card is easier to read than the instructional copy provided during class.

To order, visit the National Mahjongg League website and purchase the Large 2026 Card. The cost is approximately $15, and delivery may take several weeks.

Continue Playing After Lessons

The best way to retain and improve your Mahjong skills is to continue playing immediately after completing your lessons.

We strongly recommend:

  • Finding friends or family members to play with regularly

  • Forming a small group of 3–4 players who can take lessons together

  • Scheduling games soon after completing the course

Better yet, gather a group of friends and take the lessons together. You'll be able to continue playing as a group after the lessons are complete, reinforcing what you've learned and building your skills through regular play.

Regular play is essential for developing confidence and becoming comfortable with the game.
